How much freedom did you have when you built them, and how much freedom do you have now that they’re built? Your answers speak to the heart of modular design. At a time when every product seems eager to call itself modular, that claim should mean something more than “assembly required.” It should mean adaptable, changeable, and moveable.

A Matter of Degree

Modularity, like freedom, lives on a spectrum. It isn’t defined by parts; it’s measured by what those parts allow you to do. Set the bar low enough and almost any product can claim modularity when all it’s really offering is moveable parts. Is furniture really modular just because you can rearrange it? We believe the bar should be set higher—and furniture that moves is just called furniture. 

The GOAT of Modular Products (It’s Not Us)

You don’t become a worldwide phenomenon without doing something right. That’s why we’d argue LEGO is the greatest modular product of all time. Its genius lies in its freedom: the freedom to create, the freedom to change, and the freedom to move it from one house to another. If you’re an engineer of modularity, that’s your trifecta. If you’re a maker of garage shelving, that DNA probably won’t change the world, but it might change a few garages.

Change Should Mean Change…Not Starting Over

LEGO works because it unlocks imagination. Those simple blocks create connections that inspire creativity and invite change.

Garage shelving that bolts to walls doesn’t match LEGO’s mobility. Shelving that’s premade doesn’t offer LEGO’s adaptability. And shelving that must be disassembled before it can grow does not share LEGO’s DNA for changeability.
