There sure is!
Aside from straight, the most important thing to look for is dry.
In theory, 2x4s are 1½" thick. In practice, few are exactly that. Moisture is the primary reason dimensional lumber deviates from the ideal. Wet lumber is considered unstable, which is a fancy way of saying that as it dries, it can warp. That's why we designed the Bracket to effectively cull lumber with a high moisture content.
Both horizontal channels on each Bracket will readily accept 2x4s up to 1.54" thick. In our testing, thicker wetter wood simply warped too often and too much, especially as the lengths increased.
For this reason, we highly recommend that you opt for kiln dried 2x4s.

Absolutely!
You certainly can. In fact, we've printed more than 100—using everything from entry-level PLA to high-end carbon-filled nylon. If your goal is equivalent performance for less money, however, our experience tells us that you won't get there… at least we couldn't.
First, there's the issue of strength. FDM layers are prone to delamination—a weakness only exacerbated by the temperature swings found in a typical garage. Even the best filaments we tested fell woefully short.
Second, there's the cost of materials. At one pound per bracket, by the time you allow for supports, you're well into a 1 kg spool before you're done. Once you do the math, the savings—and performance—just aren't there.
Of course we could. But making the cheapest shelving bracket was never our goal. From day one, our objective was clear: to use the strongest materials and engineer the best bracket.
Even so, opportunities to cut costs were certainly there. Thinner walls would reduce material cost and shorten the injection-molding cycle time. Low-grade plastics—like those used in water bottles—might even go unnoticed at first glance. But cutting corners isn’t the mark of a craftsman, and it was never an option for us.
We understand that a premium product won’t fit every budget. But given the choice, we’d rather you be reluctant to buy than regretful that you did.
